Roof work, from the top down
Ordered the way a roof gets looked at: the surface first, then whatever is underneath it. Call to talk through what your roof needs.
-
Ridge cap & vents
Layer 6, the peak
What goes wrong
Ridge caps crack or blow off, and blocked or missing vents trap heat in the attic, which ages the whole roof faster.
What the work looks like
- Replacing damaged ridge cap shingles
- Checking attic ventilation
- Resealing vent boots
-
Shingles
Layer 5, the surface
What goes wrong
Wind lifts and tears shingles, hail bruises them, and age wears off the granules that protect them from the sun.
What the work looks like
- Replacing missing or torn shingles
- Storm damage repair
- Full tear-off and re-roof when patching no longer makes sense
-
Flashing
Layer 4, the seams
What goes wrong
Metal pulls away from chimneys and walls, sealant dries out, and valleys wear through. This is where most leaks start.
What the work looks like
- Chimney and wall flashing repair
- Valley repair
- Tracing a leak back to its source
-
Edges
Layer 3, starter strip & drip edge
What goes wrong
Without a sound drip edge, water wicks back under the first row of shingles and rots the fascia behind the gutter.
What the work looks like
- Drip edge replacement
- Resealing the first course
-
Underlayment
Layer 2, the water barrier
What goes wrong
Once shingles are gone, underlayment is all that's left between the weather and the house, and it isn't built to stay exposed.
What the work looks like
- Replaced as part of any re-roof
- Patched under repaired areas
-
Roof deck
Layer 1, the structure
What goes wrong
Long-running leaks soften and rot the decking. You can feel it as a spongy spot underfoot or see it as a sag from the street.
What the work looks like
- Cutting out and replacing rotted sheets
- Checked during every tear-off
